HaulTech’s integrated Vehicle Tracking and Live Video Telematics Camera solutions once again provide crucial evidence to support UK hauliers including KDG Transport.

We were delighted to announce our partnership with KDG Transport back in January 2020.  KDG provide palletised freight delivery services across the West Midlands and North West where the company collects from a national supermarket chain’s RDC before delivering into their stores.  Back then the haulier installed HaulTech’s 3G/4G Vehicle Tracking and truck camera system and within days the system proved its worth by providing the evidence the company needed to defend themselves from a false claim allegation.  HaulTech’s tracking and camera system provided the critical evidence that ensured the matter was instantly resolved.

Fast-forward 3 months and the system has once again provided critical evidence. Following a road traffic incident that involved a cyclist, the finger was firmly pointed towards the much larger HGV.  However, having reviewed the video footage remotely from his desk KDG’s Transport Manager Dan Coss knew that this was simply not the case.  Thanks to HaulTech’s powerful TrakMan tracking and live camera platform, whilst sat at his desk Dan was able to quickly identify the location of the incident, download and review the footage (that showed pre and post incident video) before heading to the scene to support his driver and the wider investigation.

On arrival Dan was instantly able to prove, from the roadside, that his driver was most definitely not at fault.  Commenting on the situation Dan said “On arriving at the scene the road was sealed off, there were multiple police cars, road ambulances and the air ambulance in situ. The emergency services were doing an exceptional job working with the cyclist who was in a bad way. Our driver was majorly shook up too, as you would expect.  It was evident that the police thought our driver was in the wrong and yet on sharing the video evidence with the police they quickly saw the reality of the situation.  Without the vehicle camera system from HaulTech I don’t know how we would have been able to defend our driver against something that would have been extremely hard to challenge”.

“In the 4 months since installation the system has paid for itself many times over”

KDG are a professional haulier who focus heavily on driver training, education and compliance and from watching the footage back (which included a forward, near-side, off-side and driver facing camera) the actions of the driver were text book.  Dan said “I was able to review the driver’s actions pre and post the incident which enabled me to see the driver’s road speed, see him spot the cyclist in the distance (some 12 seconds ahead), check his mirrors, indicate to highlight his intention to move into the right hand lane of the dual carriageway, check his mirrors again before moving over. The driver continued in the right-hand lane for 5-6 seconds before approaching the cyclist who was riding on the left.  It was then, with just 2.5 seconds to spare, that the cyclist held out his right arm and crossed the carriageway directly into the path of KDG’s oncoming truck. There was nothing our driver could have done to avoid him.”

A few weeks on we’re pleased to report that the cyclist is making a good recovery after a stint in hospital – the outcome for this vulnerable road user could have been very different.  “We’re really pleased to hear that the cyclist is making a good recovery” said Dan. “Without the evidence provided by the HaulTech system this could have been a very different outcome for us and our driver.  I couldn’t recommend the HaulTech live camera and tracking system enough to any UK haulier.  In the 4 months since installation the system has paid for itself many times over – not just in terms of the claims it has supported us with (it has done that too) but in providing the confidence that our team are doing a great job in a safe and efficient manner. I couldn’t imagine operating a fleet now without HaulTech’s technology in place to support us.”

Commenting on the system HaulTech’s director Craig Lamont said “We’re delighted to see our vehicle tracking and integrated vehicle camera systems providing this greater level of insight and protection to our UK customers. With the Department from Transport statistics for 2018 reporting over 226,000 road incidents in 2018 all road users have an obligation to bring these statistics down.  HaulTech were the first vehicle tracking provider to integrate live video into their tracking platform back in 2012 and since then our technology solutions have helped to defend thousands of claims and educate tens of thousands of drivers.  KDG are a great example of a professional haulier who invests in technology to improve their road safety record whilst simultaneously reducing their operation cost.”
