Based in Northern Ireland, MWT Logistics is a freight forwarding company that operates across the U.K., Ireland, and Europe. For more than 20 years the firm has prided itself on providing a bespoke, dedicated logistics service. The TASSC-qualified haulier sees 99% of its work in the bulk haulage sector, moving goods such as barley, animal feed, and salt. As demand for the firms services grew, so did MWT’s sub-contractor workforce, creating an abundance of administrative work for the company’s Operations Manager, Eddie. We took the opportunity to learn how Eddie combatted the increased pressure of running a busy transport operation.
HaulTech: Can you tell us a little bit about your role as Operations Manager at MWT Logistics?
Eddie: As Ops Manager, I oversee almost every part of the business. So whether that’s helping with customer queries, calculating costs, planning work, or route planning. It’s pretty standard for operations managers in most firms to be diverse in their role but it has its challenges.
HaulTech: What are the challenges you face?
Eddie: There are always surprising challenges in Transport that you can’t prepare for from vehicles breaking down to illness and that’s okay. But the most challenging thing can be administration work. You could be the busiest firm in the world but if you don’t get your admin right, it can all fall apart. For me that has been the biggest challenge we faced at MWT until we found a Transport System.
HaulTech: What were the steps that led you to get a Transport System?
Eddie: I planned all the work using an Excel spreadsheet, it took me forever. I was starting work at 6 am and not stopping until 10 pm. It was exhausting. I looked online for something to help me get the job done quicker and more simply. I stumbled upon HaulTech Transport Software and it’s helped MWT and myself massively.
HaulTech: What does a Transport System do for you?
Eddie: It saves me personally about 6 hours a day by automating a lot of the things I was manually rinsing and repeating before. Once I put the time into getting the system set up, it made everything else simple. Before when I had a job come in, I would have to write up the information, then type it into a spreadsheet, calculate the cost, inform the driver, and so on. Now, all the customers’ details are saved, so I just add the job to the system and it does everything else for me.
If I were to look back at how many things I did before to ensure a job got done, I probably had 12 touchpoints. With a Transport System, I have just one.
HaulTech: After witnessing what it has done for you, would you advise other haulage firms to use a Transport System?
Eddie: Yes, and I think as time goes on and more and more people use Transport Software, it will just become a basic need for firms. I couldn’t imagine going back to the way I worked before knowing there is massive time savings to be made when using HaulTech.
