Hasan Huseyin talks about Doherty Heavy Haulage’s operations and how a transport system has helped him to regain his life. 

Doherty Heavy Haulage is a third-generation, family-run transport firm based in Luton. They are a division of B&R Doherty (Haulage) Ltd which has been operating for over 60 years. The company believe they are one of the most experienced haulage teams across the UK for their transportation of cargo, machinery and abnormal loads. In this article, we talk to Hasan Huseyin, the Operations Manager of Doherty Heavy Haulage. He talks about the company’s success, his turmoil from planning work in his personal time and how he found a resolution to this issue.

HaulTech: Can you tell our readers what is entailed in your role at Doherty Heavy Haulage?

Hasan: So I am the person that organises all the jobs. When something comes in, I pick it up and make sure our drivers know what they’re doing that day. I also work alongside the team as a driver, so I am a bit of a jack of all trades and that was quite a struggle before having a transport system.

HaulTech: What kind of struggles did you face?

Hasan: Before having the TMS (Transport Management System), I would work using paper and everything that was planned would be physically with me in the diary. So if I was ill or on holiday, the operations would struggle, and I’d have constant phone calls to ask me where things are up to. It’s hard to share paperwork with the office without writing it down multiple times and even if I wanted to do that, I am on the road too much to be in the office. I’d actually spend most of my evenings planning out and writing down work, it’s not exactly something you can do whilst driving.

HaulTech: So how did a transport system stop these struggles?

Hasan: The struggles instantly stopped. As soon as I put the information in the system, anyone from the office can log in and see it, so if I am off, I don’t receive phone calls. It’s easy to plan work and assign it to drivers, it used to take me an hour every evening to text them with their work, but now the system sends the drivers their work instantly. I have gained my evenings and free time back, it’s basically freed up a full-time job from someone.

HaulTech: With being on the road so much, how do you use the system?

Hasan: I use my phone or iPad, it’s simple for me to do whilst out and about. Takes a few minutes and I can get straight back to driving.

HaulTech: Has the system had an impact on the wider business?

Hasan: It used to take us a really long time from doing the work to actually invoicing a customer, maybe about 6 weeks and that’s if we didn’t lose the proof of delivery. Now, we invoice daily as soon as a job is completed. We don’t have to wait for the drivers to bring back paperwork, they just take a picture on their phone and we have visibility of it, so from a business point of view, it has massively increased our cash flow.

HaulTech: Would you recommend this system to others?

Hasan: No doubt about it, yes. I got my personal time back and I wish that I would have looked at getting it sooner.
