Border Aggregates are a wholesale bulk & specialist aggregate supplier, servicing the North of England and beyond.
With a head office based in Carnforth, North Lancashire, a depot in Stevenson, Scotland, and following the recent acquisition of Cawley Bros of Llanrwst, Wales, Border Aggregates are most certainly on the up. The company’s business supplies its merchant and trade base with aggregate supplies that are geared to suit the individual needs of each product stockist.
Operating a 30 strong transport fleet the fleet are responsible for the delivery of decorative aggregates from any of its 3 strategically located sites. It’s from here that the company supplies product in varying quantities from medium and bulk bags through to 29 tonne full loads that are delivered direct to site.
As part of supporting their commitment to the environment Border are always looking for ways to improve service, efficiencies and impact.
Working in partnership with HaulTech since 2015.
Prior to the introduction of HaulTech’s bulk specialist haulage and transport software (Transport Management System TMS) Border recorded jobs using paper and excel. Their process, whilst working very well, meant that job instructions were repeated over and over again as a customer’s order progressed from instruction through to delivery and ultimately invoice.
The company’s previous process started at the point where a job was received, written down and recorded on a job ticket. The transport planners would then write the information into a job diary and, at the end of the day, the planner would then group the jobs together against each driver/vehicle/trailer. Delivery notes were written, collated and passed to the drivers. As deliveries were completed, Proof of Delivery PODs would be signed with the driver returning them to the office on their next visit. The accounts team would check all jobs from the previous day(s) to ensure PODs were received before job and customer data was added to the accounting software ready to enable invoices to be raised.
What used to take hours now takes minutes.
Today Border Aggregates’ transport operation and accounting function is unrecognisable. Through their use of HaulTech job instructions are entered once before being nudged through the processes at the click of a button before invoices are emailed (with supporting PODs) to the customer. Delivery and collection paperwork is printed within seconds making the entire transport operation run like clockwork.
Border Aggregates Director Andrew Hetherington says “Since 2015, HaulTech has helped us reduce the amount of time we spend administrating our orders plus offering automated invoice connection to our customers systems”.
Moving forwards Border are investigating opportunities to move to an Electronic Proof of Delivery (EPOD) whilst integrating the TMS to the organisation’s other internal systems.
